The final musical statement of the school year by the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wind Symphony on June 1, 2018 at Church by the Glades was nothing short of remarkable.  Thank you to our special guest artists:
Joseph Alessi, Principal Trombone, NY Philharmonic Orch.
Anthony McGill, Principal Clarinet, NY Philharmonic Orch.
Gary Green, Director of Bands Emeritus, University of Miami
Frank Ticheli, Composer/Conductor
Johan de Meij, Composer/Conductor
Andrew Boss, Composer

Below is a recording of just one of the selections performed by our Wind Symphony. This is Frank Ticheli conducting his own piece. You will hear just some of the emotion that was evident throughout the night… more clips to come soon!

Congratulations to our top two jazz bands for earning straight A’s from all judges at the 2018 Jazz Band MPA! Listen to excerpts from both jazz bands’ performances:

Congratulations to the Stoneman Douglas Band Program for making school history, once again. The Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band, and Concert Band performed at Broward College for the 2018 FBA State Concert MPA… MSD was one of only two schools in the state to have three bands qualify and perform.  Stoneman Douglas was not only the only high school in Florida to have both its top band and 2nd band receive the top rating of Superior from every judge… MSD made FBA history by having ALL THREE of its concert bands earn straight Superiors at State MPA (see complete ratings)!  As a result, Stoneman Douglas High School was awarded three Otto Kraushaar Awards, the highest award given by FBA to any high school band program for a perfect record of Superior ratings from every judge at every marching and concert band assessment throughout an entire school year!  We are particularly proud of Concert Band (3rd band)… they played a Grade 4 program and rose to the challenge!

On March 6, 2018, the Stoneman Douglas Wind Symphony gave two historical performances at Carnegie Hall. The ensemble performed works by Stamp, Markowski, Nelhybel, Mahler, and premiered a work by Jeremy Van Buskirk. Listen to Wind Symphony performing Gavorkna Fanfare to open the afternoon concert. Watch the emotional evening encore performance of the Finale from Mahler’s Symphony No. 3:

The Eagle Regiment concluded the 2017 marching season on Saturday, November 18th, at the Tropicana Dome with a performance that was awarded the highest score of all marching bands at the FMBC State Championship Finals, including the top score in MUSIC and VISUAL.  In addition, Stoneman Douglas won BEST COLOR GUARD with a score of 95, and the Eagle Regiment was named 2017 FMBC CLASS 5A STATE MARCHING BAND CHAMPION!

Congratulations to the Stoneman Douglas band program for having 12 students selected, through audition, as Florida All-State musicians!  Only two schools in the state, both arts schools, have a higher representation.  In addition, Stoneman Douglas has the highest representation in the 2017-18 Broward All-County Band.  Both of these accomplishments are school records!

At its final regional of the season, the Eagle Regiment swept all major caption awards and was named GRAND CHAMPION of the Park Vista FMBC Regional with a season-high score of 91.535!  Specific awards included:

BEST Music
BEST Visual
BEST General Effect
BEST Color Guard

Next stop is the FMBC State Marching Band Championship Semifinals being held in Tampa, Florida in two weeks. Way to go Eagle Regiment!

At its second competition of the season, the Eagle Regiment won BEST Music and BEST Color Guard for a second week in a row, earned the top Individual Visual score, and was 1st Runner-up overall by just .1… great job at the first performance of our full show!

At its first competition of the 2017 season, the Eagle Regiment won three captions (BEST Music, BEST Percussion, BEST Color Guard) and was named 1st Runner-up Overall with a solid early season score of 80.35, just .4 out of 1st place!  Congratulations Eagle Regiment!
