The STONEMAN DOUGLAS Band Program consist of 3 concert bands.

WIND ORCHESTRA                   (BAND 5 Honors, 6 Honors) 

Generally comprised of upperclassmen, the STONEMAN DOUGLAS WIND ORCHESTRA is designed for the most advanced musicians with emphasis placed on the musicianship skills required to perform sophisticated literature at the highest levels of musical excellence. Membership is based on audition. Members are required to participate in Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessments. Members must also participate in the Marching Band. Private lessons are expected. After-school rehearsals and performances are required.

The Wind Orchestra has earned a reputation as one of the finest symphonic organizations not only in Florida, but in the United States.  The Wind Orchestra consistently earns straight Superior ratings at the district and state levels, receiving the Otto J. Kraushaar Award, Florida’s highest honor, on a yearly basis. This ensemble has been selected to perform at prestigious national events including the 2018 Midwest Clinic and the 2018 New York Wind Band Festival held at Carnegie Hall, where the band earned a Gold rating with an average score of 98 out of 100 from all judges (Johan de Meij, William Johnson, James McRoy). Additionally, the MSD Wind Orchestra was named a 2018 National Wind Band Honors Winner as one of only ten 6A bands in the nation, the other nine being from Texas.  Recent guest artists and conductors include Joseph Alessi, Andrew Boss, Robert Carnochan, Johan de Meij, Col. Jason Fettig, Gary Green, Timothy Mahr, Michael Markowski, Anthony McGill, and Frank Ticheli.

SYMPHONIC BAND                       (BAND 2, 3, 4) 

Generally comprised of underclassmen, the STONEMAN DOUGLAS SYMPHONIC BAND is designed to develop fundamentals and technique with emphasis placed on the musicianship skills required for performance of advanced literature. Membership is based on audition. Members are expected to participate in Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessments. Members must also participate in the Marching Band. Private lessons are strongly recommended. After-school rehearsals and performances are required.

The Symphonic Band consistently earns straight Superior ratings at the district and state levels. Most recently, the Symphonic Band has earned the Otto J. Kraushaar Award with straight Superior ratings at the State Music Performance Assessment for the last three consecutive years (2016, 2017 and 2018)!

CONCERT BAND                       (BAND 1, 2, 3) 

Generally comprised of freshmen, the STONEMAN DOUGLAS CONCERT BAND is designed to develop fundamentals and technique with emphasis placed on the musicianship skills required for performance of standard literature. With the Director of Band’s approval, membership is open to all Stoneman Douglas High School students with previous band experience. Placement is determined by a playing audition and/or the recommendation of your previous band director. Members are encouraged to participate in Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessments. Members must also participate in the Marching Band. Private lessons are strongly recommended. After-school rehearsals and performances are required.

The Concert Band consistently earns straight Superior ratings at the district level and most recently earned straight Superior ratings and the Otto J. Kraushaar Award at the 2018 State Music Performance Assessment!

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Wind Orchestra was selected as a 2018 Performing Ensemble!
On Tuesday, May 22, 2018, the Stoneman Douglas Jazz Bands presented “What We Play is Life” – a night of jazz. They were joined on stage by world renowned 14-time Grammy Award winning artist Herbie Hancock, Lincoln Center Jazz artist Wycliffe Gordon, and 14-time Grammy Award musician Paquito D’Rivera.
