Is Color Guard a class at Stoneman Douglas?

Yes! Students at Stoneman Douglas can enroll in Color Guard as an elective class during the school day. The program also includes rehearsals and performances with our competitive ensembles, giving students the opportunity to train, perform, travel, compete, and become part of the Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment family.

Does my child need any previous color guard or dance experience?

Accepted Answer

Not at all! No previous color guard, dance, or performance experience is required to get started. Our staff teaches students everything they need to know—from movement and equipment basics to performance skills. Many of our most successful performers began with no experience at all. We’re looking for students who are willing to learn, work hard, and be part of a team.

When can students start Color Guard?

Students can begin exploring Color Guard before they even reach high school! We offer opportunities for younger students to learn the fundamentals, meet our staff and performers, and experience what being part of the Stoneman Douglas Color Guard is all about. Once at Stoneman Douglas, students can continue developing through our Color Guard program and competitive ensembles.

How big of a time commitment is Color Guard?

Color Guard is a commitment, but students quickly learn how to balance rehearsals, schoolwork, and other responsibilities. Rehearsal schedules vary depending on the season and ensemble, and families receive schedules in advance so they can plan. The time students invest pays off in incredible experiences, friendships, performances, travel, and memories that can last well beyond high school.

How much does it cost to participate in Color Guard?

Costs vary depending on the ensemble and season. Participation may include expenses associated with instruction, uniforms or costumes, equipment, competition fees, and travel. Families receive detailed information about anticipated costs before committing, and fundraising opportunities are available throughout the year to help offset expenses. We want families to understand the commitment clearly and have the information they need before getting started.

Where can Color Guard take my child?

Far beyond the classroom. Stoneman Douglas Color Guard students have opportunities to perform at major events, travel with their teammates, compete against outstanding programs from across Florida and the country, and experience some of the biggest stages in the activity. Along the way, they build confidence, independence, friendships, leadership skills, and memories that last long after graduation. Color Guard can start as something new to try—and become one of the defining experiences of a student’s high school years.

What will my child learn in Color Guard?

Color Guard combines dance, movement, equipment skills, performance, and teamwork into one unique activity. Students learn to spin and perform with flags and other equipment while developing coordination, strength, musicality, confidence, and stage presence. Just as importantly, they learn how to work toward a common goal, perform under pressure, support their teammates, and become confident performers both on and off the floor.

What’s the difference between Marching Band Color Guard and Winter Guard?

During marching band season, Color Guard performs on the field as part of the Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment, bringing the music to life through movement, dance, flags, and visual performance. Winter Guard moves indoors and becomes its own competitive performance ensemble, combining music, choreography, equipment, costumes, and theatrical storytelling. Students can experience both—and each season gives them a completely different opportunity to perform, grow, and compete.
