WELCOME TO THE

STONEMAN DOUGLAS

EAGLE REGIMENT

Founded in 1990, The EAGLE REGIMENT has been providing young adults like yourself with the opportunity to achieve amazing levels of excellence in the performing arts through various performance opportunities. By registering to be a part of the future EAGLE REGIMENT, you will begin a journey like none you’ve experienced before.

Dear 2020-21 Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment Member,

Welcome to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Band family!  The Stoneman Douglas Band, which includes brass, woodwinds, percussion, and color guard, is one of the largest and most award-winning organizations at Stoneman Douglas High School, attracting some of the most talented and active students in the school.  Band members hold very high grade point averages, are enrolled in AP courses, and are involved in numerous clubs and service organizations on campus as class officers, National Honor Society members, Academic Honor Students, Mu Alpha Theta members, peer counselors and athletic team members.  Stoneman Douglas High School is not only one of the most highly-rated academic high schools in Broward County, it is one of the top high schools in the state, with students being aggressively recruited by the top colleges and universities in the state and nation.  Our test scores, graduation rate, advanced course offerings, and many accolades speak for themselves! MSD offers both academic rigor and an award-winning band program that includes concert bands, jazz bands, marching band, color guard, and indoor percussion ensemble.

We’ve had another banner year with the Eagle Regiment, over 150 strong, being named Grand Champion at the Falcon Sound Invitational, a Bands of America Regional Finalist, a featured performance at the Walt Disney World Parade, the FMBC State Marching Band Championship runner-up, and a featured performance for pre-game of Super Bowl LIV.  Two of our three MSD concert bands earned Superior ratings at District MPA.  In addition, our Jazz Band 1 also earned Superior ratings at the District MPA.  Most recently, our World Guard, “A” Guard and Indoor Percussion Ensemble gave steller performances just prior to our season being cut short due to COVID-19.

With eight periods, there is more than enough room to include band/color guard/percussion in your schedule and take other types of classes throughout your four years in high school; this is not the case at all schools where advanced curriculums are offered.  Participation in one year of band fulfills the Fine Arts credit required for graduation AND you receive a P.E. waiver which opens up yet another class slot - yes, by being in band your freshman year, you will earn two graduation credit requirements.  Additionally, students enrolled in the MSD band program earn honors credit as they advance in the program!

There are many students who do not have the opportunity to attend Stoneman Douglas and be in our award-winning band, color guard, and percussion program.  It is truly a wonderful opportunity to have the best of both worlds - top academics at an “A-rated” high school with an incredible and complete band experience!  Universities are looking for students that are both academically strong and well-rounded in their high school educational experience!  Stoneman Douglas Band graduates are represented at the finest institutions of higher learning in the country majoring in engineering, business, medicine, law, and other disciplines as well as music.  The top music schools in Florida as well as the rest of the country seek out students who come out of the Stoneman Douglas Band Program.

This handout is provided for students and parents as a convenient source of information regarding various aspects of the Stoneman Douglas Eagle Regiment band program.  If you have a question not addressed in this handout, please feel free to email SKRivero@EagleRegiment.com.  I welcome you to one of the top band programs in Florida.  All you need is a positive attitude and the commitment to put forth your best effort!

Respectfully,

Stephen K. Rivero, Director of Bands
